Who will protect children on the Internet?

One of the new threats to a child on the Internet may be artificial intelligence technologies. The simplification of work with neural networks and the availability of their use to the general public allow attackers to use them as a tool. For example, neural networks sometimes give incorrect predictions if they are trained on biased, inaccurate data.

Another dangerous manifestation of this problem is deepfake technology (AI-generated fake videos of faces). The first such videos were of poor quality and the fakes were easily content writing service recognized, but the technology is evolving rapidly, and there are already systems that can copy a face, voice, and facial expressions. As deepfakes have improved, their use in the criminal sphere has expanded. Fraudsters use such solutions to bypass systems based on biometric verification; generate a voice for phone calls and create compromising videos for blackmail.

This technology can also be used by children themselves, using photos and other data of their peers for the purpose of cyberbullying or stalking.

Children and teenagers can use such tools for entertainment or to complete online challenges without realizing the seriousness of the consequences of their actions. That is why educational and outreach work by parents, teachers and mentors is the basis for preventing information threats.

There have been more frequent cases of extortion by telephone, when criminals call a parent or child and, using speech synthesis technology to impersonate the voice of a close relative, extort money from the victim or intimidate them.

The use of deepfakes also takes the problem of gaslighting – psychological violence aimed at creating a feeling of artificial madness and disorientation in reality – to a new level.

TO HELP CHILDREN

The development of artificial intelligence also actualizes the problem of responsibility of IT developers and the ethics of using new information products. When releasing new solutions to the market, corporations must implement tools in their software that prevent its malicious or incorrect use.

In particular, companies that are members of the Alliance for the Protection of Children in the Digital Environment are actively working on developing a set of preventive protection measures based on big data, profiling, predictive analytics and continuous monitoring of dangerous content. The Center for Legal Assistance to Citizens in the Digital Environment makes a significant contribution by educating and providing legal assistance to citizens and their children in the matter of protecting their personal data. The Center was created in 2021 on the initiative of Roskomnadzor. In 2023, 1.6 thousand people sought help from the Center.

In the case of new and current threats, there are a number of basic rules for parents and teachers, following which will allow them to establish a trusting dialogue with their child, on the one hand, and take accessible preventive measures, on the other.

The first thing to do is to discuss internet safety rules with your child. Make sure your child understands that personal information such as name, address, and phone number should not be disclosed online. Explain to them that they should not respond to messages from strangers and should not give out their password or username.
